Has anyone seen this?

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primary/publications/literacy/1159795/

Does anyone know who writes it?

There are various quotes from the Rose Review yet the content does not appear to reflect an understanding of these.

The screening for reading is 'interesting'.

And here a is a quote from a TA who has 'delivered' it

Quote:
The Quest is a hard programme for the children and there is lots of real hard work, so much so that I have had wails of "Aren't there any games?" And "no" is the answer to that. Poor loves!
And it is so long...by the end of Module 2 the kids are fed up with Sir Kit and wish he would be eaten by the dragon. And my wily lot know all too well that there will be no real punch-up at the end! How right they are....they don't yet know that they don't even get to see what was in the treasure box. And as for fitting it into 20 minutes! I guess I have the wrong children...I am cracking the whip now and cutting bits out but can't see that I will finish it in time.

Old circuit, I mean Sir Kit, has been knocking around for quite a while now behind the scenes. He is the product of the searchlights mentality, whereby the blandarins of the DfES demonstrate yet again their total lack of faith in teaching all children to read using synthetic phonics.

Who needs this boring load of tosh? All they've done is tweak it to make it look "Rose compliant" and bring it in line with the new strategy framework.

Bin it.

That program is so "scripted" that there is no room for teachers or assistance to help children with their decoding problems or help them learn to decode "irregular" words.

If the children can read the words all the other work is not necessary. They will learn all that in their regular classwork. Why is it made so complicated kiss "Keep it simple stupid" I don't think that they are familiar with the concept. What they are doing is just making a muddle of everything for the children caught up in it. There is no way for the kids to figure out what it is that they are being taught.

Very good point, Roger.

It seems ironic that a teacher working in China can exactly pinpoint the problem and yet all those highly paid people in the DfES keep contaminating and derailing things. And on the Mumset forum - thread on dyslexia - the young mums, teachers - seem to get to the nub of the matter far, far better than our civil servants do.

Can we start a campaign to have a bonfire of all the Prog in Phonics, Playing with Sounds, ALS, FLS,ELS materials?

Well, not quite all the materials. I spotted the bin and the treasure chest from the ELS trolley in a clip on the Letters and Sounds DVD! And it also came with phoneme frames, whiteboards, magnetic letters, letter cards and picture cards. A bit of judicious recycling might not come amiss.
