I prefer the Chambers Dictionary (I don't yet have the 21st C. version) to the Oxford Compact, because of its better coverage of scientific vocabulary, and because it tries to cover US, CAN, SA, AUS also (I'm not in a position to judge how well).
I would be interested to hear of experiences with the Oxford English Dictionary 2nd Edition version 3.0 on CD. I saw a demonstration of the CD of the 1st Edition in about 1990, and thought the software already looked very powerful. If it's as good as I thought it was then, every secondary school should have one. It is advertised at $225 in the US. I haven't found a UK supplier yet.
