I have my own worksheets/products which are based on Mona’s programme but tweaked for us Kiwis. My website is
www.astepatatime.co.nz
I personally use flip books until the alphabet is known (the pictures are on the back of the page – although no picture could be used and the children could draw their own). For example when the children are learning ‘o’ the books contain the following pages:
BOOK 1 BOOK 2
cot dot
cod cod
dad cat
After ‘m’ the books contain the following words:
BOOK 1 BOOK 2
mix mop
van ram
rot wet
cod zap
pat fix
met cog
wig nod
I try to ensure that each book revises all the sounds already known, but has at least two examples of the new sound.
I have a list of words that can be introduced after each letter. If anyone would like a copy just let me know. This list is fantastic for making up books like above or playing games/activities.
After the alphabet sounds have been taught, the children start learning their vowels and start blending and segmenting four letter words (with ‘normal’ sounds). This is where I start introducing some of the ‘tricky’ words e.g. a, be, of etc.
Again the pictures for these books are on the back. Some of the books I use are:
