The ELS and Reading Recovery are not one and the same, though there are lots of similarities. RR has to be delivered on a one-to-one basis, and by teachers who have undergone much more extensive training than ELS teachers. Both are very much whole-language approaches, however, with children being encouraged to recognise words as wholes and guess from context and pictures.

During a recent Ofsted I was asked by an inspector why we did not use ELS. When I said it was because we thought it was pretty useless HE AGREED! Just shows it pays to be honest sometimes.

this is a link to the DfES ELS programme.

It is a 12 week daily scripted programme designed to be delivered by TAs in the Spring term of Y1.

I have also found a reference to a different ELS
