There continues to be a significant number of phonics detractors - particularly with regard to the use of nonsense words in England's statutory end of Year One phonics screening check. I am personally very pleased that we have this phonics check - I think it is invaluable for professional development. Unfortunately, in my view, it has led to the over-use of nonsense words games in England which I describe via a UKEdCHAT podcast.
