Synthetic phonics advocates who attended the rEDliteracy conference may have seen Prof Steve Higgins' talk.

On slide 16 he states that spelling should be ''taught separately and explicitly''

Any comments on the ''separately''?

Yes - I went to his talk. He's a very accomplished and lively speaker. I don't think that there should be a 'should' in respect of spelling. Many programmes, including the one I'm now involved with, teach spelling directly after a body of story decoding/reading - with alphabet code structure - has been introduced. This has advantages but so too has the tightly constructed linguistic phonics approach which teaches decoding and encoding in tandem. Having taught struggling children with both approaches, I can see advantages in each of them.
