This is a reader's letter to some media article about the call for formal testing again at the end of Year Two.I'm not sure what the latest league tables tell us about the current state of primary education in this country, but I think that the following, heard last week, speaks volumes: "My child brought home a Christmas card he'd made for me at school. On the back was a typed message. It set out the learning objectives covered in the task."
I work hard for raising the fundamental literacy levels of learners - but am on record of decrying the formal target-setting system and labelling children by national curriculum levels (a system of allotting a number and letter).
The reader's comment did not surprise me but how utterly awful that teachers may have reached this point even for making a Christmas card!
