I once did a BBC breakfast show with Christine Blower from the National Union of Teachers (NUT). She criticised synthetic phonics, a proven system for teaching reading. It was only afterwards, off-camera, that she admitted she had never actually seen synthetic phonics being taught. She displayed a basic ignorance of how it worked, on national television. Not knowing something is one thing. Holding forth on a subject you do not fully understand is another.
