Rose Review

Apologies for the 'dumb' question (and probably more to follow) but I've been hiding under a rock for a while! Could people please confirm the status of the Rose Review of the teaching of early reading? Ie. is it a statutory requirement to have implemented all/some recommendations? If so, when should this have been done by? And is this all completely separate from a Rose Review of Early Education/Primary Curriculum whose implementation has now been suspended?

Never apologise for asking any question - we do it too - and it is what the message forum is for.

Your question is a very good one.

The guidance in the UK government's Letters and Sounds (underpinned by the synthetic phonics teaching principles and brought out subsequent to the House of Commons inquiry and the independent national review of reading instruction led by Jim Rose (Final Report March 2006) - IS NOT STATUTORY.

Schools can choose what they provide by way of reading instruction even in the UK.

The primary curriculum review led by Jim Rose, however, which was poised to be implemented by the previous government and which has now been suspended, is an entirely separate review.
