Gordon Brown has placed his former adviser Ed Balls in charge of a newly reformed department focusing on children, families and schools.
There will be another new department responsible for innovations, universities and skills, led by former Home Office minister John Denham.

The children's department will have a "co-ordinating role" on children's health, welfare and child poverty.

It will be called the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Am glad it's Ed Balls - and it makes sense to divide this unwieldy department - Alan Johnson seemed always too busy with University and F.E. problems to have much time to oversee what was actually happening on the ground in schools.

But what on earth is going to happen 16-19. There's one heck of a lot that needs sorting out there, too.

Please, Ed Balls. Have a very close, detached look before unleashing any new initiatives and please, please don't allow Reading Recovery to derail the Rose initiative!

As of Tuesday 19th June, the Guardian thought Andrew Adonis would probably stay in the Government, which is encouraging. The article is mostly about AA's enthusiasm for Academies, but note the last paragraph, in which AA rates his support for Rose as his prime achievement.
