Educating kids in Spain...

A little anecdotal story really. The painter who came yesterday - bronzed and handsome - said that he lived most of the ti me in the countryside near Grenada. He moved his children from North Oxford schools when the younger, age 9, was told he had literacy problems. One year on, at the village school in southern Spain he's bi-lingual, writing has hugely improved, and he's responded to the carefully structured writing practice etc. etc. T he painter also appreciated parents evening accompanied by brandy, wine etc.

There are so many of these stories it becomes wearisome to mention them. But for the fact that I wanted the house finished I would have spent many happy hours mining this subject....from the angry plumber, age 51, who couldn't spell but who had to convince himself that that didn't mean he was stupid, to the carpenter who'd bust a gut to prove that he had other talents - but he's just read his first book for pleasure - Harry Potter, when out fishing .
