Re: 'Perceptual reading'
There are several reports from schools using the Literacy Toolbox to great effect. Re: It’s the Students, Stupid
How come some teachers can control a class and others can't? In my experience and opinion there are a couple of significant things about class 'control or 'behaviour management'. The most significant - for me anyway - is how familiar and practised I am with the material and the lesson. This year I h...

Re: Sitting in rows is best
The conclusion is important, but, and a huge but, is that moving furniture around for maximum effectiveness is a pain. I speak from bitter experience of being a support teacher where I have to fit into existing arrangements! And working - usually with the lower progress children - it is absolutely a...

Re: Opinion about the Year One Phonics Screening Check
if I've understood correctly, proponents of SP advocate children learning to discriminate between phonemes in spoken words first, before being introduced to graphemes. Then the phoneme-grapheme link is established and this is followed by reading words and then sentences. I think you will find there...

Re: Opinion about the Year One Phonics Screening Check
And just how 'standardised' is the check? So far I have only come across discussion of raw scores. Will these scores be standardised by considering the backgrounds, baseline levels, needs and circumstances of schools and pupils? Those things you mention, Toots, background, baseline levels etc, are ...

Re: Phonics blog: Word Guessing
J AC, correct guesses are distinguishable from incorrect guesses, in most cases, through the application of common sense. ..and sometimes, children fail to use any common sense at all. I hear this daily with the poor readers, when what they 'read' makes no sense at all, because they have appeared to...

Re: Phonics blog: Word Guessing
Volunteer - I gave Toots a similar kind of example to the one you did on the other thread - the nitty gritty of what a teacher says in a very particular situation matters. Children are capable of learning a course of action from one example, and once you allow 'guessing' as a credible option, many w...
