Mr H, I, in my technical ignorance, can only echo FETutor's plea for you to stay in charge. The site works, and we Anglo-Saxons/Yanks can ask no more of a system. I have no idea what other projects you had in mind, but I can imagine no more important activity than getting scientific literacy teachin...

Dear eloquent Debbie,

Would you run that last paragraph past me again? Perhaps with a bit more punctuation?

P.s. Kelly, thanks for the information, Does that mean, in your experience, that a Maori child entering a mainly white school is as unusual as your message seems to imply? Is there, in fact, a tendency to segregation in MOST schools? It's basic data like this that give us the clues to what's prevent...

I've just done a brief troll through some NZ websites. Did you realise there are only about 4 million of them, of which only 9 % are Maoris? There is definitely a strong militant minority of the Maoris (Marxist, originally at least) who are convinced of a strong racist bias in the dispensations of t...

To clear up any misconceptions: pakeha = (white skinned) European type.

I heard from a Kiwi temporarily resident over here that Maoris live in the same areas as Pakehas. Perhaps they are still segregated to some extent within these areas, and go to largely separate schools...with extra-progressive philosophies. Any Kiwis out there to enlighten us on this, and possibly e...

Looks hard enough to me, mon brave! Thanks for the research. I gather that in many schools there are now specialists introducing kids to a tradition of games and customs that had been unbroken, up to the electronic age at least. The kid-created original chants that go with this rhythmic activity mus...

...very interesting! 'French skipping': you interest me strangely, ma Leslie. Like everything 'French', I presume it has some peculiar characteristics...well, using a length of ELASTIC for a start. I have read the Opies' 'Lore and Language' but can't recall the use of this material. How does does it...

After a very delayed appreciation of what Lesley was saying about the oral component of RML s.p. teaching, I have finally seen at least one useful function for the classroom 'elbow buddy'. In a well-conducted SP course like this, at least a child gets to talk logically WITH AT LEAST ONE OTHER KID, a...

Well said, Mr Walport.

It's just a pity that it takes a detached rational observer like this scientist to take a brief look at this educational edifice the 'experts' have constructed - and condemn it down to the (literacy) foundations.

Teachers' TV really went to town on premature teaching last evening. First there was the prog on Sweden: no inspection or heavy paperwork etc. and starting at 6, but no mention as usual of their transparent written language or literacy teaching methods. Next there was an hour-long Big Debate, under ...

Topic: serious overhaul of apostrophe teaching needed??

Hold on: 'xma's', 'idea's' (and of course, tomato's). Isn't there a sort of pattern emerging here? If a vowel is followed by an 's', it needs the 'reinforcement' of an apostrophe. In the decades' absence of grammar teaching, the girls and boys have been 'doing it for themselves'. Just a thought... B...
