Re: Students confusing a/e/i and o/u

Welcome. I am not Wilson-trained, so I don't speak from experience, but the number of rules seems to overwhelm quite a few of the instructors. Just this week I showed a Wilson-trained individual some synthetic phonics materials and she was amazed that such a simple, straight-forward approach to teac...

Re: Sound Discovery: results from a challenging Reception class

Susan G.,
What is your source for the report you include in the original post of this thread? Is it available on the Internet?
Thanks.

Current study with children with Down Syndrome

http://www.dseinternational.org/en/gb/ This randomised controlled trial is evaluating the benefits of a carefully structured teaching programme designed to improve reading and language development for children with Down syndrome. Does anyone know any details about "the programme" being used in the ...

Re: Whole Language dominates Australian Indigenous education

both scripts are written by some old guy in the US - Chris Sarra This isn't the first time I've seen agism in the writings of those opposed to the systematic teaching of phonics. Here is another example: When the National Reading Panel (NRP) was formed I yawned again, if only because virtually all ...

Fresh Start from Read Write Inc.: some details requested

Would someone here please describe what the RWI Fresh Start manual is like? I can find no samples online of what is to be found within its covers. How does it differ from the regular RWI Phonics Handbook and/or the Speed Sounds Lesson Plans? Also, what other RWI resources are needed to go along with...

Re: Accountability

Another possible answer is that there may be SO many children in this child's school who are reading 4 years or more below grade level that he was able to hide in the woodwork. I am very curious about the fact that this school brought in an educational psychologist to assess students who were not ev...

Re: Accountability

One answer, perhaps, is that some teachers seem to think that if the child is "reading" grade-level material with great speed and an accuracy rate of 85% or greater, then all is well. No matter that the child reads "President Mason" for "President Madison" or "Frankeh" for "France." I have had eleme...

Re: DfE: Publishers and their Products list and self-assessments

However, educational psychologist and pioneer of the THRASS (Teaching Handwriting Reading And Spelling Skills) programme, Alan Davies... firmly believes that learners should be given the ‘big picture’ about the sounds and spellings of English and that the best way to do this is through using pictur...

Re: Multi-syllable word instruction for strugglers

Thank you, Susan S. and Rod, for your help! For this short-term intervention I ended up creating materials that included a section rather like one Susan S. describes (circling affixes, underlining vowels) and a section that focuses on chunking multi-syllable words that contain focus letter-sounds (u...

Re: TES threads of possible interest to RRF'ers. 2

Mystery10 in that TES thread also points out that schools often have NO idea of the reason many skilled readers are skilled: Parents have done the teaching of reading at home, but are hesitant to admit to this at their child's school. This is equally true in the U.S. I tried to encourage a parent wh...

Multi-syllable word instruction for strugglers

I would love to hear from folks here who work with small groups of struggling readers (age 8+): How do you approach instructing the students in working through multi-syllable words? It's one thing to work on multi-syllable words in a one-on-one tutoring situation, but with a group of 2-4 students, h...

Re: Teachers TV

And then there are the cases in which the child looks at the first letter (and possibly the last as well), then at the picture, and comes up with a word that very nicely matches the meaning/picture. . . . In one session of listening to a few 7 year olds read aloud, here are just a few examples of mi...

Re: Research specific to Read Write Inc?

Thanks, all. It isn't required of my colleague that the program itself have empirical support. It is sufficient that the program's primary elements are research-based. I was simply wondering if there was anything specific to RWI that I was missing.

Research specific to Read Write Inc?

Are there research studies which utilized Read Write Inc.? I ask because a colleague of mine is intrigued by the (few) Read Write Inc. materials I have, and she has to do an assignment on a "research-based" reading program for a course. I will be sending her links to several research studies which s...

Re: 'Specialist dyslexia teaching' unwrapped

I would love to know what 1967 publication by Keith Stanovich Ms. Williams is referring to. A quick Internet search reveals that he earned his BA in 1973 and Ph.D. in 1977. So, I shall assume she is referring to 19 7 7. But, in any case, her indication of Stanovich's view is the opposite of the conc...
