Is it helpful for a parent to say something to a WL teacher?

I told the kindergarten teacher at the end of last year that I had begun teaching my child to read using phonics. She was not enthusiastic. Do I keep my mouth shut with this year's teacher? There is virtually no phonics to be found in my child's classroom. I am being asked to direct my child to use ...

Indeed, I have tried to focus on just the "b" for now, and have had her say the sound when writing it. She actually has difficulty more often when reading than when writing for some reason (due to her habit of rushing to a guess?). At her school they always start at the top, so I don't think pre-cur...

b and d confusion

My daughter has been doing really well with difficult sound-letter correspondences such as "igh" and "ou," etc., BUT she still confuses b and d almost all the time. I understand that this is fairly common. I wonder if I might have been able to avoid this had I known at the time to teach her these gr...

Thank you. I followed Susan's suggestion and found a Jolly Phonics trainer. She was quite helpful. I will follow up on the abecedarian suggestion as well.

Thank you for your responses; they have been helpful. I have had a look at Phonics International's resources and spoke with a trainer about Jolly Phonics; indeed they don't seem to be quite as scripted as Zig's. I do think that there is an emphasis on teaching phonological awareness in isolation her...

Are the SP programs scripted?

I have read through lots of posts here and have looked through my Jolly Phonics brochures, but I can't seem to find out if JP and other SP programs are scripted. How much leeway do the teachers have in their presentations? The scripted aspect of many of the systematic phonics programs in the US is o...

Jolly Phonics in U.S. schools?

I recently called Jolly Phonics to find out the names of school systems in the US that use their program. They told me they don't keep track. (Wilson/Fundations told me the same thing.) I would love to speak with teachers or administrators at a US school (preferably a school already considered "high...

It would be great for those of us outside the channel4 audience if someone could write up some of the points made in the report. Please! I read the article on Channel 4's website, but that was just to draw people in to viewing the report. Did it provide any $ figures comparing costs of the S...

Phooey. The channel4 programs are not available online to those of us outside the UK or Ireland, so I can't view "Hope for the Last Chance Kids." This RRF website is really wonderful. I have been reading it thoroughly for the past 4 months, but somehow hadn't read any of the posts in the "General Fo...
