Re: Siegfried Engelmann: one of America’s great educators

[quote]If what matters to you is 'top performers', then fine, get the government to set the curriculum, directly instruct students in it and they'll probably come top in league tables. Has being top of league tables had a positive impact on quality of life in Singapore? To some extent. It's made Sin...

Re: All Together Now

Yes! Hats off to you, Jim, and well done! I second what Debbie had to say: Wow, Jim - this is absolutely excellent - that is, the article itself, that it was published and the very welcome response. I agree with your view on social integration - and I applaud your constant and consistent effo...

Re: Sue Cowley and speed reading

The problem with many people's understanding of the concept of 'speed reading' is that the question of text density is rarely brought into the equation. Clearly, it is easier to read text that is less dense: i.e. sentences are short; there are few embedded, defining or non-defining relative clauses;...

Re: Outstanding overview addresses nonsense in Davis's paper

Thanks, Jenny.
On the mispronunciations of the 'blow' type, I'm sure you're right. I could have done with asking you before I finished the point. It would be interesting to know how often children do lose a mark for real words such as these.

Thanks, Jenny.
And, Geraldine:
I wonder if you would mind if others (if so minded) would likewise challenge - via Charlie Taylor? The pressure for change needs to be relentless, methinks and needs to be directed, as you have, to the top.
I have no problem with that.
best,

Re: Cam. Uni to open PS to act as research centre

I posted this http://literacyblog.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/the-philistines-are-upon-us.html on my blog yesterday. It makes public my exchange of emails with Charlie Taylor's secretary. [Charlie Taylor is head of the the National College for Teaching and Leadership.] I'm well aware that one shouldn't g...

Can't you guess, G? You'd better ask Maizie. She's good at spotting the aliases of a certain individual ;-)

Re: Outstanding overview addresses nonsense in Davis's paper

Hi Debbie, I've just replied, a bit testily I admit, but then such a stupid shoot-from-the-hip piece deserves a bit of a broadside. I also resisted the temptation to draw attention to the misspelling of 'humorous' in the article  I'm sure it was a typo. We'll see if they print it. The Herald i...

Re: Outstanding overview addresses nonsense in Davis's paper

Thanks to you Jenny and Lesley for your kind words. The last bit wasn't added as an afterthought. I am really concerned that all the hard work everyone does can be so easily undone by the likes of Rosen, Davis and company. This is a hard fight we're in and we know it. But at least we're not in the p...

Clearly too many for the professor!

Re: Outstanding overview addresses nonsense in Davis's paper

Brilliant interview on Radio 4, Debbie! Well done! My daughter, who was listening with me, said how well you spoke and how clearly you came across. On Davis: she couldn't understand why he should think that phonics doesn't help with comprehension because, as she put it, 'surely you have to be...

Re: Why some kids can’t spell and why spelling tests won’t help

We've just had Pale Rider (http://community.tes.co.uk/tom_bennett/ ... laced.aspx), so I don't suppose a reprise of playing Misty for me will do any harm, Susan ;-)

Re: Papermover again

I suppose that, like me, just about everyone who reads Papermover's posting will be very sorry that she is in such a position and furiously annoyed by the complacency of the head. On the big picture, I have to say that I have never put my trust in the powers that be. There is a very simple reason fo...

Fortunately, John, I can read for meaning in spite (or because??) of the misspelling!
 Michael Rosen would be pleased!
