The Guardian

Last letter was from me. I hadn't logged on.

Thanks, Susan, for the link to the Guardian. Although not all poor readers behave badly, I would imagine we all know a disproportionate number of poor readers who do behave badly.
Another reason for a change in government support for the NLS.

Re: "When words fail" Observer article, 20th Feb.

More publicity - There's a summary of the Observer article by Geraldine Bedell in this week's edition of 'The Week'. It's in the column headed 'Best articles:Britain' and the headline is 'Our children can't read and we know why.'

But if you can read this and are 10 years old, maybe you should thank a reading method called synthetic phonics. A seven year study in Scotland appears to demonstrate wit...

Having spent the day hearing radio news programmes and getting excited about what might be on Newsnight, my initial reaction to the programme was disappointment. I could tell they had edited out some of the most important parts and I felt for Debbie. However, on balance I think it was brilliant. The...

Ideas for Research

Any suggestions? This week I began a postgraduate course, called ‘Learning, Curriculum and Assessment’, with the Faculty of Education of the Open University. As part of the course, I am asked to choose an area or aspect of a specified curriculum of interest to me, and to analyse and identify the rat...

Have other members seen this? The Daily Telegraph Wednesday, December 8, 2004 Why teachers fail to teach reading John Clare Is there one foolproof way of teaching all children to read? And if there is, why haven’t we adopted it? The method that works for all children is teaching them letter sounds f...

Thank you Elsy and quipg.
Yes, I wrote to the governors about the situation at the end of last term and I handed the letter to the chair of governors. As yet, I've had no response.
I feel very much for the teacher in the appalling case you wrote about.

Imposing NLS Methods

I have direct and recent experience of the power of those in more senior positions to impose NLS methods. I’ve had to leave the school I was working at because I wouldn’t encourage children to use picture clues to help them learn to read. I have considerable experience of the searchlight strategy pr...
