Re: TES: Davies (Thrass programme) posts letter to Cameron

Is the pre-trial version available anywhere please Jenny?

When people say a child can "read" on entry to reception , what is meant by this? When we say "reading by six" or seven, or 100, what do these statements mean?

Re: TES: Davies (Thrass programme) posts letter to Cameron

I like that answer. I know some schools that could do with reading it as they have the same misunderstandings.

Re: TES: Davies (Thrass programme) posts letter to Cameron

For the uninitiated, were the findings of Torgerson et al that there was no measurable difference between analytic and synthetic phonics meaningful?

Phonics match funding for schools

Please can you tell me what this system is and where it is set out. I am not aware that the school I volunteer at and that my children attend is making use of this scheme at all.

Re: Ofsted Annual Report

It does make you wonder if they have got their methodology right when the statistics show this. There is no causal link between serving the most deprived communities and being a poor teacher, poor head, poor whatever. I wonder if the inspection judgement is too "results" driven. In the school with m...

Maizie, you were going to say something about Toe by Toe. I'm still very interested. Thanks.

Ah thank you, I didn't know that red was ditties. I think I need something beyond pink level quite soon, but I'll take a look at it.

Re: Any reading books that introduce graphemes in RWI order

Thank you everyone. Please can you explain a bit more about the RWI home readers if you have them handy. RWI colours for the storybooks go: green purple pink orange yellow blue grey How do the home readers fit with that please? And which sets of speed sounds are covered in each book? And do they int...

Re: Any reading books that introduce graphemes in RWI order

Thanks Geraldine. It is frustrating because I don't see the harm in him repeating the books, and I really can't imagine that the school is going to cover all the RWI books with him in the short period of time they spend on phonics each week. Trouble is because I am connected with the school in other...

Any reading books that introduce graphemes in RWI order

I am wanting some decodable reading books that introduce graphemes in exactly the same order as the RWI phonics lesson plans. Each time I work on a new grapheme I want to be able to reinforce it with a short reading book that has introduced just that one new grapheme. The RWI storybooks (7 sets gree...

Re: Read

So do you think that all children should have systematic teaching through all 144 ish GPCs, or that different children will be able to leap off a phonics course at different points depending on when they take the leap forward you are describing and teach themselves the finer complexities of the Engl...

Re: b d confusion

Thanks everyone. She has a method at the moment; it is foolproof, but it involves looking away from the text which I think is counterproductive. I like that Rod method - a bit more complex, but it keeps the focus on the text I feel which is a step forward to automaticity, and not a distraction in th...

Re: b d confusion

Great. She came in last week to the one to one with me and said her Mum was upset that she was not doing Toe by Toe daily at school ........ from the records it looks like it has barely happened, and I am schedule to do it once a week only. Do you use Toe by Toe? I'm thinking it's good in a lot of w...
