Re: Grapheme/phoneme correspondence for 'ure'

Oh dear, this is getting more complicated than I'd ever imagined. Jenny, yes we have many hard copies of the L&S in school but I haven't got a hard copy at home and I'm working from home at the moment. I'm trying to produce something for others to use and it is purely for the purpose of teaching the...

Re: Grapheme/phoneme correspondence for 'ure'

Hi Jenny, I looked at the online documents (that I have) and couldn't actually find the footnotes you refer to. The problem is, I like many other teachers, will have downloaded just the phases that they need and not the main booklet. For example, Phase Three begins at page 72. I had a look at the Ph...

Re: Grapheme/phoneme correspondence for 'ure'

Thanks everyone for your replies, which have really helped me clarify this. Mazie, you were spot on with 'It rather begs the question as to which phoneme it is meant to be representing'; this was exactly what I was meaning. This is what I think it should be after reading all your replies: When teach...

Grapheme/phoneme correspondence for 'ure'

I'm making a set of phase three grapheme cards to correspond with the 'Letters and Sounds' document but I'm stuck on 'ure'. Should it be 'ur' without the 'e' on the end? The example word given is 'sure' but other words with 'ure' in have a different pronunciation such as 'treasure'. Can anyone help ...

I don't know whether or not you've had the opportunity to teach phonics during your PGCE. It is great fun, interactive and the children love it!

Would be interested to hear about your conference with Prof. Rhona Stainthorp.

'Michael Rosen on Literacy' - Teachers TV

I’ve just watched a video on Teachers TV 'Michael Rosen on Literacy'. This is the first time I’ve seen any of his programmes. I watched with disbelief as he argued against teaching phonics and argued for learning 'whole words'. It was quite painful to watch as he and Dr. Bethan Marshall, Senior Lect...

I've just had a quick look and I think the word 'heat' is meant to say 'hear'. The objectives are taken mainly from the Early Learning Goals with a few others thrown in. I think the word 'heat' is meant to say 'hear'. As long as you continue to re-enforce good practice at home he will be fine. It's ...

How do you fit Jolly Grammar into your literacy lessons?

I'm moving from Reception to Year 1 in September. I've used Jolly Phonics and want to use Jolly Grammar in Y1. I introduced JP to the school nearly 3 years ago but nobody has used the JG yet. Well here I come Year 1!!! The HT is in support of me but I need to convince my co-teacher that we can easil...

Dianne I've not been on this forum for ages due to Ofsted and many other reasons. Your post has just reminded me of why I love coming onto this website and why I must find more time to do so. I love your story and it is by no means a 'small achievement' it is 'A GREAT BIG LEAP'. Congratulations to b...

I agree entirely with what Diane is saying. In addition to this some of the points are really woolly, for example: ‘Links some sounds to letters’; how many do you think ‘some’ means? ‘Links sounds to letters, naming and sounding letters of the alphabet’; does this mean they know all 40+ phonemes and...

I'm feeling disappointed that this thread has turned into a discussion about codes. :x I'm bringing the thread back to the top in the hope that someone else has information on this. I need to be able to pass some convincing evidence onto my colleague, unfortunately, anecdotal information isn't enoug...
