Re: Word Lists for UK national curriculum
Hi, Peter - good to hear from you. I haven't had time to look through all this again in detail, but I don't think there are any word-lists as such for reading. For spelling, a few example words are suggested for each grapheme-phoneme correspondence but they are non-statutory. The only statutory wor...

Word Lists for UK national curriculum
Greetings again from Japan! As we say here, 'Yoroshiku onegaishimasu...' which translates to something like 'please be kind to me...' Wow, my last visit was almost precisely three years ago. Those years have been devoted to church work and street ministry, which has become my primary focus. The reas...

In addition, both the first and last "a" in "banana" could go in the /o/ row, although obviously both tend toward schwas, being in unaccented syllables. As an American with a 'Midland North American' dialect, let me happily concur with everything Rod wrote, (everything!) except that one line above....

Re: English as a Foreign language, and Literacy (online video)
Thank you, Marlene. I appreciate the opportunity to learn more about this. You wrote: the notion of 'product' and the multiplication sign is absurd. The only notion that it can apply to is that if, either decoding or comprehension is nil, then reading cannot take place. (similar to maths and multipl...

Sincerely, this thread is a testimony to the diligence and good character of each of the participants. Thank you to each of you. We're on the same team, and I think each of us is well aware of that. Marlene's questions are constructive, and the objections she raises expose weaknesses in our own expl...

Re: Introducing the letters for beginning handwriting
Thank you, kenm for that response. That passage of Pinker's words precisely echoes the passage from Psalms 1:7. (Pinker) The history of human folly, and our own susceptibility to illusions and fallacies, tell us that men and women are fallible. Yes. We should be careful not to confuse temporal, worl...

Re: Introducing the letters for beginning handwriting
Nothing to do with handwriting (or is it?) but it can be interesting to observe how children hold and manipulate their cutlery at meal times. I wonder if some are ever taught how to hols a knife & fork... They are clearly related, as they both indicate how seriously adults take their responsibility...

Re: What are the graphemes in 'door' & 'four' ?
Thank you all for your helpful comments. I don't really have any objection to any of them, but I do sense a slightly different perspective. For the sake of understanding I should explain that in this discussion, I'm more concerned about the writing pattern than the precise pronunciation. My attentio...
