Mini Books by David Lisgo
Hello Everyone, It has been a long time since I have posted anything. I do hope you missed me. These are first mini books for young children. They come in three versions: full colour, black and white and blank. Colour: use this one when you don’t have lots of time. Have the children make their books...

Hi Kelly, Great game. I had a quick look at it last night and then early this afternoon I decided to make "read, spell and say". My playing boards are similar to your own except I have "read" at the top, "say" in the middle and "spell" at the bottom. No particular reason for changing it, it just cam...

Hi Jenny, I think that the time has increased from 10 seconds in order to accommodate the short story Diane now tells, so perhaps a minute or two at the most. With my pre-reading class (only for first graders/formers) we do some phonics work, as well as singing and dancing, playing games and practis...

Hello Maize, I'm not looking at phonics based reading schemes everyday, but I recall that most of them focus on the beginning sound, Here I'm talking about the initial stage before the letter is introduced. In fact, interestingly, Jolly Phonics doesn't start off with a word, but with a sound. My 199...

I should have read the previous page: Lessons begin by drawing the children's attention to a particular phoneme by producing it in isolation (/sss/), and/or having the children discover it by listening to a little story that features the sound over and over. I'm so pleased to hear she sometimes has ...

Thank you Jenny for the clarification and reference to "Early Reading Instruction" where Diane says on page 156 Notice that the sound /p/ appears in all positions in a word. After the children learn to hear this sound, and say this sound in first, middle, and last positions, they see the letter p an...

When I first heard the McGuinnesses speak in London in 1998, they said that the gap between the moment they introduced a phoneme and the moment they introduced a grapheme for that phoneme was 'all of 10 seconds'. Jenny, are you talking about Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness? If so how does that "10 s...

Why not sit down face to face and show her? It would take fifteen seconds for her to mimic your mouth posture and vocal effort (and pronunciation), and then she would have a direct physical and personal sensation to connect with the 'n' grapheme. Granted, you might have to repeat that effort a few ...

Hi, I tread lightly here. I am someone who has taught phonics for over 20 years in Japan (I know. It doesn't make me an expert.) and I'm a colleague who has "questioned" Peter's conclusions. "until Taro can produce, discriminate, and identify the phonemes of English, he will be unable to perceive th...

Saw one on the floor at one of Debbie's seminars, she got the idea from Sue Lloyd. Give me a break! I never teach initial blends, but they have to read them sometime. http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff325/David_Lisgo/blblock.png http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff325/David_Lisgo/brBrazil.png ht...
