Re: Bogus reading instruction

Then after Rose 2006 "Teach phonics", Rose 2007 "Letters and Sounds" is ghastly. Why does the RRF not challenge it, urge that Gove throw it out? - and cut the ed-budget by £40bn or more each year! and let in common sense? here is only one safe way to teach reading, and that is DEcoding based on 26 l...

Re: Governments must stop lying to children about life chances

I see Gove is willing to travel to Masssachusetts, thousands of miles, to look for an snwer, but will not come 200 miles to talk to me. Are his staff censoring my missives?

Re: Governments must stop lying to children about life chances

But "qualified" today means brain-washed. We would be far better off if reception class teachers just had common sense. Why would any parents want teachers to spend their children's time processing non-words? Education will only recover when Gove removes the control at the very top, DfE, from people...

Re: Governments must stop lying to children about life chances

I got this from a recent OECD report. It certainly includes England where I live. 1 in 4 is bad eough! How long before common sense joins teh dots, that if the "highly qualified professionals" produce a 1 in 4 failure for half a century, the experts msut be wrong. Let us return to common sense, and ...

Re: Governments must stop lying to children about life chances

A report from OECD says lieracy here has gone down from the appalling 1 in 4 failing of 60 years to, now, "almost 1 in 3". The people responsible are government, LEAs and teacher training. If they are responsible, they have to be guilty. No way is this terrible failure "normal". The lost potential i...

Re: Phonics in prisons

I wonder how many prisones ever get to the end! And what is the average ratio gain? I tried to get "Step by Sep" trialled, but I think I was up against The Blob. It was stopped after one lesson - on grounds that they were worried about my personal safety!! Governmetn these days just does not work. H...

Re: KS2 results

Having said "Teach phonics"m2006 it is a pity that government then issued "Letters and Sounds" claiming to be systematic when it is a horrible jumble. Because teachers were not shown prper phonics, there has been no whisper of complaint ro challenge to this horrible programme. How can ANYBODY think ...

Re: Phonics in prisons

How many of you have looked at "Toe by oe"? It DOES go from letters to sounds, DEcoding, but is boring. There are no puzzles, games, worksheets except always the same - write a word correctly on 3 successive days! And it drowns in non-words - 25 pages of non-words! Cost £31, instead of £5 for my "St...

Re: The Upside of Dyslexia

We should teach all children to read the way dyslexics need. Then dyslexics would learn along with the rst. The trouble is that current received wisdom even using "phonics" is not enough. It has to be DEcoding phonics, very different from "Letters and Sounds". I hope this year the B.D.A. will urgent...

Re: Baseline Assessment in Reception

And it is about time there was more control on the cost of research that, voer the decades, has seen such decline! Getting it right would allow massive cuts of £billions - every year. And... raise teacher job satisfaction of reception teachers, and we would not NEED teachers with "special qualificati...

Re: Baseline Assessment in Reception

The expectation for beginners in reception should be Nil!
Test at end of first term if you wish, but I would test at year-end of R, Yi an Y2. That is plenty. And use old tests.

Re: Save the readers!

Common Core e tc. are initiatives. Education has been initiated to death in Britain. We need to go back and BACK, before 1931. Everything since then has brought our education to its knees and kept it there, and still politicians throw money at it, "Rin-fenced" budget. Berit Kjos is a well-informed l...

People who are really thinking in depth, like this, need to study what Berit Kjos says:-

Part 1: The Global Roots of "Common Core" Education

Part 2: The Rising Force behind "Common Core" Indoctrination

Part 3: Common Core: Who Will Rule the Global School?
