Re: The BFG, Skellig, Aubrey ... children’s books boom

You got there first, Jim! I was just copying the link to post it up. It cannot be a coincidence that the rising popularity of reading for pleasure for children follows on so neatly from the introduction of sp in all schools - more like cause and effect for me. As well as all the children involved, a...

Re: Reading Schemes - "Decodable" or "Look and Say"?

Sadly my 6 year old grandson is still sent home with 20 yr old ORT books to read. I've tried to access the new RRF statement on book bands that is mentioned on the home page, but can't get to it- any advice on how to do that?

Just testing whether posting works this time! It's great to see the website showing signs of life once again- thank you to everyone involved, both in the old version and the new.

Anyone know of a 1:1 trained phonictutor in South Manchester

I've tried looking at tutor agencies for the area, but none of those listed seem trained in synthetic / linguistic phonics, any methods (if any at all) referred to are of the multi-sensory variety.

I've been thinking about this, and wondered how all you trainers advise the classroom teachers you train?

Trainees told to modify their accents for teaching phonics

I would have thought that they should be told to talk about differences and model in the regional accent of the children they're teaching and their own. As a northerner teaching adults in London I often gave two versions. Or three- London, northern and RP! http://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/m...

Display of new topics

Does anyone else think that passing new visitors to the General Forum might assume it is moribund because the first items, with very old posting dates, are stuck at the top? I don't know if other people can see more, but my screen does not show the newer subjects unless I scroll down far enough. Eve...

Re: Adult student

Sounds-Write is similar in approach to TRT, SRS and the American programme I trained in, so should be fine. I often found that auditory processing/ sound manipulation exercises could be of benefit to new students, using real or nonsense words. Some people (tutors) object to the use of nonsense words...

Re: Adult student

I hope you find teaching adult students is enjoyable and rewarding, like I did! I retired from 1:1 teaching adult beginner and struggling readers a few years ago, and still miss it. What you have found out from your assessment checks does sound typical of most students I taught, and training in ling...
