Re: Thank you

The misplaced insistence that comprehension is weak, and the repeating of books read (as school reading books) over a year before, is something that we have come across as well. I do worry that without better training of teachers, and a focus on the transition from good early phonics to free and mor...

ITT and SSP

The thread on this seems to be locked - to me, anyway. Another discussion has cropped up on twitter where the current/past teaching of SSP in ITT is being mentioned, so I wrote a little blog post as a call for information. It's here https://miscellaneouswitterings.wordpress.com/2015/10/10/itt-and-sy...

Good practice videos of reading books with phonics?

Hello all, I'm collecting filmed examples of reading with phonics, and am looking for good practice examples - or, equally, less good practice examples with explanations of what needs improving. I'm hoping this will be useful for teachers and (especially) parents, but also a helpful resource for cla...

Re: Already reading at start of school - probs with sch phonics

Hello Jenny, Yes, my own experience as a parent and school reading volunteer, and hearing about the experiences of friends and family with primary-age children, is that there is the potential for difficulty if not well handled. Children who start school able to read to some extent - via phonics or a...

Re: Already reading at start of school - probs with sch phonics

The problem with the blog, I've found, is that comments often end up dominated by discussions which are not quite relevant to the individual post. I have always wanted to be inclusive and not take sides in the debate, but in the case of a post which discusses something so specific, about a named sch...

Re: Already reading at start of school - probs with sch phonics

My own view is that there are a few children (very few) who are reading and writing so well at school entry that they genuinely don’t need systematic phonics input from the school. I agree, Chew8. The school does not seem to have managed to communicate, to this parent at least, how & why it teaches...

Re: Already reading at start of school - probs with sch phonics

And thank you, Maizie, for the further information. I suspect confusion on the child's part (it does seem the likely explanation), especially if she has picked up reading herself in a relatively ad hoc way, and the KRM system is very involved, as it seems to be. I have suggested some simple but dire...

Re: Already reading at start of school - probs with sch phonics

Hello all, Sorry - when it became clear that this issue concerns a particular named scheme, I felt that it would be sensitive to take the original post down, and rethink the best way to deal with it. Here is the letter on its own, in a new post with comments disabled, so you can read it: https://mis...

Already reading at start of school - probs with sch phonics

Hello all, Edited to add: The linked post no longer exists [Please see details here https://miscellaneouswitterings.wordpress.com/2015/09/21/reading-already-starting-school-and-phonics-posted-for-discussion/ - I'd welcome opinions, and any advice to be passed on to the parent concerned. Debbie has a...

Re: Handwriting books

I can especially recommend Debbie's leading/joining strokes, and the clarity of her materials :) Both my children (one left-handed, one right-handed) have benefited from these!

Re: Handwriting books

Hello, I'm sure others on here will have more specific guidance, but it's worth looking at the National handwriting Association's website http://www.nha-handwriting.org.uk/ if you haven't already, and contacting them about specific queries. They're always pleased to hear from people who care about g...
